Self Tape Instructions for S.E.B. Casting: National Forest Foundation Step 1 Record a slate
If a family: Start with a shot of the whole family together. This will be a wide shot – that’s ok! Then please go to a medium-close shot of each family member and state your name, age and location. This can be one continuous, sort of going down the line kind of thing, or individual clips edited together to form one clip. If individual: Please start with a nice medium-close shot, state you name, height and location – state your age if you are under 18. Thanks! Example video https://vimeo.com/472780332 Step 2 Record the audition piece. Lighting; make sure you are lit from the front. Stay away from back lighting and do not record in front of an open window. Find a blank wall if possible, take down as many things on the wall behind you as you can.
Sound; try and make it as quiet as possible. Turn off sound makers like phones and electronics, put them cute doggies away Stable camera; place your camera/phone on a tripod or stable surface like a table or stacked books on a table. Get your camera eye level.
If you are using your phone (which is totally fine) turn it on it’s side so you are recording in ‘landscape’ format, the same shape as your widescreen TV. [we view your auditions on computers, when you record ‘vertical’ phone style we see lots of black space on the sides, not full screen.] FAMILIES: This project is all about your relationship with each other and with nature. Specifically, your relationship with forests. We want to get a sense of what you like to do TOGETHER in nature. We would like you to tape yourselves as a family unit. Tell us a story about an outdoor adventure you shared together. Parents, we really want to see you interacting with the kiddos, so feel free to start the story and then get the kids to fill in details. No need to “act” out any scenarios. We really want to know you and see your personalities. Please dress casually, like you would to go hiking or camping, but nothing costume and please no “gear” like fishing vests or binoculars or backpacks. Keep it real and keep it simple. If you can get outside to tape – that rocks!!! Even if it is just in your backyard. INDIVIDUALS: Please tell us about your favorite outdoor adventure – bonus if it was in the woods! EXAMPLE TOPICS FOR EVERYONE: (you do NOT have to do all or even any of these. They are suggestions) Do you remember that time we went camping together? Do you remember what kinds of things we did? What was it like to sleep in a tent? Was it hard to set up camp? Do you remember what we ate? Who cooked…how did they cook? Was it good? What kinds of things did we do around the campfire? (Sing/smores/ghost stories…) What is your favorite memory from the trip/hike/adventure? Etc. OR I would love to hear tales about favorite hikes.. Silliest things the parents did…What kind of things did you find? Did you collect anything (rocks, feathers, etc). What kind of animals did you see? What is your favorite memory in the outdoors? What is the coolest thing you have ever seen? What brings you peace? Also…do you have a family dog? Do you like dogs? If so…does your dog come on hikes or camping? Where does your dog sleep when camping? ***If you have a dog you want to include in the tape…please do!!!!! The main thing is to be your wonderful, natural selves – even if that self is a little quirky or silly or serious or whatever you authentically are! Less structure is good! Way better than stiffly sitting in a row and saying something rehearsed. Be spontaneous and let the conversation and interaction flow. Also, we want to hear from every member of the family, not just mom! heh heh! As a mom, I can say that! ;o) IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are a family auditoning together, please ONLY auditon the members of your family who fit the casting specs!! No additional family members, please. Thanks!!! Example video https://vimeo.com/472781431 PLEASE NOTE!!!! We will be viewing self tapes as soon as they upload. The sooner you can get this in, the better. Don’t wait till the last minute! Thanks!! Step 3 Trim your videos and export.
This is simpler than it sounds but it does take a little bit of practice. You can use your phone, computer or third party app. Trim the beginning and end of your videos so we see only your slate and auditions. You do not have to do any major editing of your videos and PLEASE, do not add any title cards, cross fades or effects. This is NOT necessary and often distracts from you, your acting and takes up precious time. Step 4
Label and send. Please put your name and role on the file instead of just a bunch of numbers and letters assigned by your phone or computer. Something like John Doe_Mystery Man.mov would be great. Then upload it to your media request. Please separate your takes into individual files so you don’t exceed the file size limit for uploading. Simply label it like this: John Doe_Mystery Man_Tk1.mov Have fun and break a leg!!!
